The $300 Million “Appliance Stimulus Package Rebate” Program is currently being planned for this fall and is funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for state-run rebate programs, for consumer purchases of new ENERGY STAR® qualified home appliances. The “Appliance Stimulus Package” program will offer rebates of $50 – $200 on the purchase of “High Efficiency” or, “Energy Star” seal household appliances.
It is estimated that most of the money for Appliance Stimulus Package Rebates will be spent on refrigerators this fall when the rebate programs go into effect. Consumers should be getting ready to take advantage of the “Appliance Stimulus Package” program by budgeting, and gathering information on appliances which they may want to replace. The “Appliance Stimulus Package” program is one where you want to be ready to act so that you can take full advantage of the program when it becomes available. You should prepare get the maximum benefits from the program and the deep discounts that are expected to accompany the program as well as the advantages of saving energy and improved reliability. The energy savings of the “Energy Star” appliances can offer a huge savings on your utility bills and details of the savings possibilities are listed on the energy star website. Older refrigerators from the 70’s could cut over $200 from your utility bill each year and refrigerators from the 80’s could cut over $100 if replaced with an “Energy Star” appliance under the “Appliance Stimulus Package” program.
U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu said, “Appliances consume a huge amount of our electricity, so there’s enormous potential to both save energy and save families money every month.” Secretary Chu also said, “These rebates will help families make the transition to more efficient appliances, making purchases that will directly stimulate the economy and create jobs.” The “Appliance Stimulus Package” is providing ray of hope to the battered appliance industry and although it will probably fall short of lifting them out of the worst downward slide of sales in the industries history, it will provide some badly needed relief. Whirlpool Corporation the worlds largest appliance manufacturing company with 70,000 employees at 68 locations around the world, and annual sales of approximately $19 Billion, has reported a sales drop of about 20% in the first 2 quarters of this year, with the rest of the industry sharing similar results. Wall Street has reacted favorably to the news of the “Appliance Stimulus Package” with Whirlpool stock shares increasing 6% when the “Appliance Stimulus Package” was first announced, and another 5% the following day of trading. The reaction was heavy as it is based on a best case scenario of $240 million in sales coming to Whirlpool as a result of “Appliance Stimulus Package” program.
The Department of Energy has set a deadline of Oct. 15, 2009 for states to file formal applications. The “Appliance Stimulus Package” program details will vary by state and the Department of Energy expects the bulk of the $300 million to be awarded by the end of November. The Department of Energy news release stated, “States have the flexibility to select which residential ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances to include in their programs and the individual rebate amount for each appliance. DOE recommends that states and territories focus their program efforts on heating and cooling equipment, appliances, and water heaters as these products offer the greatest energy savings potential. ENERGY STAR® qualified appliance categories eligible for rebates include: central air conditioners, heat pumps (air source and geothermal), boilers, furnaces (oil and gas), room air conditioners, clothes washers, dishwashers, freezers, refrigerators, and water heaters.”
The list below has the current models of Frigidaire Refrigerators which are carrying the ENERGY STAR® Seal and are qualified under the federal guidelines of the “Appliance Stimulus Package.” The Models may vary slightly at volume retailers such as Lowe’s, Home Depot, Best Buy, & Sears as they often carry special model numbers specific to their stores. Model FPHC2399KF might become LFPHC2399KF at Lowes.

The individual states are administering the Appliance Stimulus Program Rebates.
The states have until October 15, 2009 to submit their plans for the administration of the plan to the Federal Government. After that, the plans will be approved and money transfered to the individual state programs.
Start watching for the details of your states plan on and after the October 15th.
In the mean time, start looking for the best choice of a refridgerator for your Mom.
With a model as old as her’s there is a good chance that she will end up saving around $200 a year on her utility bill when it is replaced with a new Energy Star refrigerator.
Be in a position to immediately take advantage of the Appliance Stimulus Program Rebates when the program goes into effect in your state.

I am remodeling my kitchen and have been comparing all types of appliances. I have a samsung french door model waiting at lowe’s for me to look at. It is energy star rated. How will I know if this model will be acceptable? Or will all energy star models be in the plan?

That will be an approved model, all energy star models are. You need to check the details of your state program when they become available. This will probably become available near the end of October.
